I have a confessionI have a confession to make…

But before I do, let me tell you a story. It was a friend’s birthday recently, and I gave her a gift 📘 I thought she might like. I was right, because she was ecstatic when she opened it.

“Meliss! This is so thoughtful! Did you read my Facebook post this week, the one about how much I wanted this book?” She beamed as she flipped through the pages.

Um… I hadn’t 😬

In fact, I’d bought the book months ago when I saw it on sale. I do that often— shop for birthday and holiday gifts months in advance. It’s a way for me to save time and money. At the time I’d been proud of my gift and equally proud of my forethought. But now, in the moment, I worried. Did planning ahead somehow make my gift less thoughtful? Would she think less of me if I told her the truth?

“Actually, I bought it months ago. It made me think of you.” I confessed.

And guys, she loved that. She was even more impressed with my planning and thoughtfulness than I had been!

So, here’s my confession to you:

I didn’t write this article today. 😳

I didn’t even write it last night 💁 By the time you read this, it will have been weeks 📅 since I originally penned these words.

It’s not because I don’t find you worthy of my time— it’s the opposite of that. Rather than writing these articles on the fly, I take my time with them. I consider what topics will be interesting and useful, I research them, I check out the links, and I write and rewrite these articles until they are just right.

That takes time, energy, and effort. I do it because you deserve it. You take the time to read these articles and that means so much to me. But the truth is that there’s simply not enough hours in the day for me to think and research and write and edit these articles just minutes before I hit publish.

I do the same things with the emails I sent out to my tribe of people who wish to receive them.

Why?

They wouldn’t get the high-quality content they deserve without email automation.

That’s right, my emails are automated too! After they’re written, they go into an automated email system that sends them out for me, days weeks, or even months later.

So, why did I tell you this story👆 and make my big confession?

I think you should do it, too.

And I’m going to tell you how…

I pulled together some tips to help you 📈 your 📧 game— today.

1. Choose the right email platform

MailChimp, Mailerlite, Convertkit… There are dozens of email marketing platforms for you to choose from. Choose one that fits within your budget and includes all the tools you’ll need.

2. Cna you raed tis?

Don’t hit “send” without doing a quick grammar sweep! Easy-to-read emails are important for our always-on-the-go society. If your email is packed with spelling and grammar issues your subscribers might feel it’s not worth their time or, worse, that you don’t care enough to check. Grammarly, Hemingway App, or ProWritingAid can check your work for you if grammar isn’t your jam.

3. Segment, segment, segment.

You can segment your subscribers based on when they joined, which emails they’ve opened, or their demographics. This will make sure that subscribers only receive relevant emails that they find interesting.

4. Play around!

Maybe your subscribers like their emails first thing in the morning. Maybe they prefer them on Sunday evenings for a leisurely read. Maybe they only like Thursdays at 3:14 in the afternoon. You just won’t know until you try them all! Play around with the timing and, while you’re at it…

5. Split test those bad boys!

Try two different subjects, or sending one in the morning and one in the evening. Try out a bunch of ideas until you figure out what works for you and your business. And if all else fails…

6. Ask your subscribers.
